Staff-to-Child Ratios by State
Maintaining appropriate staff-to-child ratios is an essential part of creating a safe, well-supervised environment for every child at AlphaBEST.
JUMP TO
Staff-to-child ratios vary by state and age group. All team members responsible for supervising children should understand the requirements for their site and ensure proper supervision throughout the program day.
Understanding Staff-to-Child Ratios
A staff-to-child ratio specifies the maximum number of children that one qualified staff member may supervise.
For example:
- 1:10 means one staff member for every 10 children.
- 1:15 means one staff member for every 15 children.
- 1:20 means one staff member for every 20 children.
If a program has a required ratio of 1:15, a group of 16 children would require at least two qualified staff members, subject to any additional group-size or supervision requirements.
Ratios can differ based on children's ages, whether they are enrolled in school, and state licensing requirements.

Maintaining Proper Ratios Throughout the Day
Ratios should be monitored throughout program operations, especially during arrival, dismissal, transitions, and changes in staffing.
Keep these practices in mind:
- Know your site's requirements. Familiarize yourself with the applicable ratio for the children in your care.
- Monitor attendance. Know how many children are present and which staff members are available to supervise them.
- Plan for transitions. Ensure appropriate coverage when children move between activities or staff members change responsibilities.
- Communicate staffing concerns. Notify your manager immediately if staffing levels may fall below requirements.
- Account for mixed-age groups. Confirm which ratio applies before combining children of different ages.
Staff-to-child ratios are one part of effective supervision. Team members must also follow applicable group-size limits, active supervision practices, and other safety requirements.
Questions About Your Site's Ratios?
If you're unsure which ratio applies to your group, or if you have a concern about maintaining proper coverage, contact your manager for guidance.
